SUMMARY:Janice Bottrill - Zoom Talk - 'Slow\, Quiet Work'
DESCRIPTION:An introductory talk by Janice – sharing her work and approach to teaching. \n  \nAbout Janice \nJanice Botterill is an artist\, writer and tutor. She uses the techniques and processes of traditional embroidery and darning to make drawings\, collages and quilts. Working towards a zero-waste practice\, she works with pre-loved\, repurposed or natural fabrics and threads. She prefers the slower\, quieter practice of hand stitching\, focusing on just a handful of signature stitches in her work. \nShe is very interested in the crossover between textiles and other creative practices and in particular how contemporary artists\, collectors and galleries are blurring the traditional barriers between stitching and embroidery (often seen as domestic and craft techniques) and fine art practices such as sculpture\, painting and installation. \nShe often combines her stitched work with writing and printmaking and is relearning how to use a vintage treadle sewing machine to expand her practice. She is a member of several South West UK textile groups and shares her enthusiasm and knowledge of embroidery and hand stitching through teaching and facilitating workshops. SUMMARY:Sue Lawty - Zoom Talk - Textile Travels in India & Bhutan
DESCRIPTION:A vibrantly illustrated talk visiting two regions of textile excellence. Locked in the foothills of the mighty Himalaya\, The Buddhist Kingdom of Bhutan is a nation of stunning landscapes\, colourful festivals and an enduring tradition of handwoven\, highly patterned textiles. In India we visit ancient desert villages and wonderful families to explore weaving\, bandhani dyeing\, printing\, embroidery and more. Both are extremely exciting and stimulating countries to travel through. \nAbout Sue \nSue Lawty is a highly experienced artist\, designer and teacher. She constructs textiles using raphia\, hemp and lead\, and makes drawings and assemblages using tiny stones\, creating a kind of pixelated cloth. \nIn 2014 Lawty held a prestigious Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship in Washington DC and New York.  She has been Artist in Residence at the School of Earth & Environment\, the University of Leeds and in 2023/24 held a three-month IASPIS International Artist Residency in Stockholm\, Sweden. \nSue Lawty is also a keen fell runner and an accomplished trekker\, leading both hard mountain treks and specialist textile trips to Bhutan\, India\, Nepal and Central Asia. SUMMARY:Rachel Davies - Talk -  “How Textiles Tell Stories”
DESCRIPTION:Textiles and clothing are representative of the economy\, society\, and each of us personally. \nI will discuss my textile background\,16 years as a textile lecturer\, love of embroidery and embellishment and how I use it as a vehicle to tell personal stories and highlight issues of sustainability. \nI will bring a series of garments\, accompanying sketchbooks and artwork to explain my techniques and explorations and how upcycling\, visible mending  and sustainability are now at the forefront of my work. \nAbout Rachel \n\n\n\nI trained as fashion and textile designer at Loughborough. This was followed by some years in the textile industry designing for store groups in the Midlands. I moved to Cheshire in 1991 and started my own business painting murals and designing greetings cards. \nIn 2006 I trained as a textile lecturer and worked in Further Education for 16 years. \nIn 202I   I left F.E and set up independently utilizing stitch with community groups around Cheshire\, teaching sustainable textile workshops\, mending workshops\, giving talks and creating conceptual garments. \nI have exhibited at the Grosvenor Museum\, Chester Cathedral\, Castle Park Frodsham\, Willow Gallery Oswestry\, Editions\, Liverpool and had multiple solo exhibitions. \nIn 2021 I was asked to become resident artist for Tarporley and since then have facilitated a number of art projects for the  village. \n \nWebsite: http://www.racheldaviesstudio.co.uk \nThe talk is free to members of Textile Explorers
