SUMMARY:Nigel Cheney - Talk - "Unravelling the Archive"
DESCRIPTION:Introducing Nigel\, his practice and work to date \nNigel Cheney is an embroiderer who lives and works in Market Harborough\, Leicestershire. \nHis work deals with memory and narrative\, through complex visual metaphors and plays upon literature\, history and fables. His work explores the tensions between the handmade and digital technologies and often uses the natural world as a key reference point.  A fascination with colour\, texture\, surface and mark making informs rich\, layered grounds. Graphite studies of birds and animals are photographed before being digitally manipulated and combined to develop compositions that are printed onto fabric before stitching onto previously loved textiles. He enjoys the contradictions between unwanted textiles\, painterly grounds\, exact machine embroidery and detailed hand stitch that translate his drawn marks. \nHis work has exhibited widely throughout Europe and has won numerous awards and is in a number of International collections. \nWith extensive experience in Education\, Industry and as external examiner he held the position of Lecturer in Embroidered Textiles at National College of Art and Design\, Ireland for over 24 years before retiring to live in his native Harborough 7 years ago. \nThis talk is free to members of Textile Explorers\nDoors open at 7pm

SUMMARY:Nigel Cheney - Workshop - Material Memories - textile collages incorporating digitally printed illustrations
DESCRIPTION:Nigel uses imagery of birds and animals to create visual narratives that allude to various stories\, myths\, fables and legends. The theme of this workshop is woodland and this will inform your ideas about colour and mood in your work. \nOn this 1 day\, intensive workshop participants will be introduced to techniques in fabric collage and detailed ‘Slow Stitch’ of illustrated elements. Emphasis will be placed on colour\, composition and using stitch to ‘draw’ in thread. \nInspired by the array of examples of different approaches to hand stitch and fabric collage that you will be shown\, this workshop will allow you to gain the confidence to assemble your own collage of fabrics and bring them to a cohesive surface through stitch. It will also include the development of charming stitched motifs to apply onto a ground. \nNigel uses a broad palette of textile techniques in his work and assures you that this workshop can be undertaken entirely in machine or hand stitch\, or indeed any combination. \nEveryone will be able to chose from a selection of original printed fabrics (unique to this workshop) that have been created from Nigel’s hand-drawn illustrations of both woodland creatures and birds. Developing your own individual compositions you will be encouraged to introduce other textile elements that ensure your own unique response to the challenges of this workshop. A  broad selection will be supplied\, but this is a chance to integrate your own vintage fragments\, scraps from charity shop finds or even your unfinished samples /fabric prints/eco dyeing from previous workshops. \nNigel will bring a collection of his own work to inspire you\, and even some drawings and prints available to buy. \nOne day workshop. \nThe techniques shown are inspired by cultural and ethnic textile philosophies\, where the life story of the cloth is inextricably linked with its new purpose. Hopefully this workshop will help us all to consider using existing fabrics in our practice as well as our constant love of buying new ! \nUsing the provided digitally printed\, hand drawn motifs\, we will look at how to bring the prints to life using slow stitch to accentuate the details and create texture and form. \nIn this workshop we will assemble an A3 size base of different fabrics. This will focus on composition and balance. DESCRIPTION:An in-depth look at the many fabric books that Bernice has made. She make books in a variety of ways and these processes will be explained as we look at each book. \nAbout the Artist \nBernice trained as a primary school teacher and later became a church administrator.  She now concentrates on all things creative including facilitating a course on Creativity.\nAfter successfully completing City & Guilds Creative Embroidery\, she continued to work with textiles until Art Journaling and Mixed Media called. \nBernice particularly enjoys making books both in card and fabric and has taught online workshops on altered books and themed books via recorded videos.  She also works with textiles\, often involving the themes of canals or Venice.  More recent work has become more personal.

DESCRIPTION:Jane works in mixed media\, collage and textiles.  She has travelled extensively with two very memorable trips to Antarctica in 2002 and 2020 where she fell in love with this cold but beautiful place.  Her work takes inspiration from landscape and memory whether it is a local walk or marvelling at icebergs.  She is fascinated by stone circles and the evidence of early people in the landscape. \nShe builds her work in layers starting with a base fabric and adding collage\, paint and stitch. She reuses and recycles fabric\, bringing the evidence of previous use (buttons\, unpicked seams\, darts etc)\, left over scraps and threads into her work. \nShe moved to Worcester in 2018 and joined the Bevere Gallery Artists Studios in November 2022. She regularly exhibits with the Midlands Textile Forum and is a member of On the Surface Group in Moseley\, Birmingham taking part in Birmingham Open Studios and of Stitch Together Textiles. \nJane has been fascinated (not to say obsessed) with the history of exploration in Antarctica for over 30 years.  She visited twice and fell in love with this cold\, but beautiful\, place.  Her first visit in 2002 kick started a renewed interest in working with textiles as she tried to capture the strangeness of bergs and the colour of ice.  She created a textile diary on her second visit in 2020 (just before Covid19 shut everything down) and has produced many more works since.  She also become a trustee of the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust – the trust looks after 6 heritage sites on the Antarctic peninsula including Port Lockroy\, the penguin post office. \nThe talk is free to members of Textile Explorers\nDoors open at 7pm

Do not make your backing fabric too heavy as building up layers will make the piece hard to stitch through – or so thin that it is too flimsy!\nSmall selection of light/medium weight fabrics (cotton\, linen\, polycotton etc) that match the colours/patterns/texture of your walk. DESCRIPTION:Having fun playing and stitching in circles  \nThis workshop is to let yourself free to experiment with stitch and texture a time to experiment with threads and fabrics.\nThe workshop can be done using hand stitch and or machine stitching.\nA background will be prepared by patching and or weaving remnants of fabrics to make an interesting surface to work with and add to. \nWe will then discuss a variety of stitches and surface textures to form a pattern of curved shapes  Stitches can be a combination of machine and hand you might want to use applique methods\, coiling and couching all ideas will be open for discussion\, even maybe the odd Suffolk puff. \nEquipment  \nSewing machine with a standard straight stitch foot and a machine embroidery foot. \nMachine embroidery frame if you like using them\, extension lead \nSewing kit usual hand stitching kit\, scissors etc. \n Background fabrics can be new or old remnants of cloth\, you can add pieces of lace or ribbon . A neutral or tonal palette works well. Enough to do an approximate 12×12 inches square all similar oblong 8 x14 inches \nWhen choosing your fabrics please test that a hand needle and thread can easily go through the fabric\, some woven fabrics are hard to hand stitch.\nA fine lightweight calico or similar about quarter of a metre. \nHand threads in colours you would like to work with in a variety of thickness for stitching and couching \nMachine threads in colours you would like to work with plus a neutral or tonal colour to secure the background fabrics. \nOptional extras\nCouching threads which could be soft strings\, garden twine\, dishcloth cotton\nButtons or other  small round objects which can be incorporated into the piece of work  e.g washers\, curtain rings\, \nN.B. DESCRIPTION:I will talk to you about Japanese textiles crafts\, discussing the origins and history and daily usage of the following crafts: \n\nShibori resist dyeing\nKatagami stencilling\nSashiko embroidery\nBoro\nKogin counted thread Sashiko\nKasuri weaving\n\nI will bring examples of all these vintage textiles for you to see\, including vintage Japanese textiles and examples of my own work. \nI will explain how I came to be a Japanese textiles designer/maker and teacher and tell you a few tales of my trips to Japan to learn with my sensei and internationally renowned Japanese textiles artist\, Bryan Whitehead. \nAbout Rob \nLondon-based Romor Designs was formed in the autumn of 2016 by Rob Jones\, a shibori textiles designer and natural dyer. \nHaving discovered Shibori\, the ancient Japanese art of resist dyeing\, at West Dean college\, Rob went on to study in Japan under indigo guru\, Bryan Whitehead. \nIn 2018 and 2019\, Rob returned to Japan to expand his Japanese textiles skills and teaching practice\, visiting Ise\, the home of Katagami stencilling and the Sashiko museum in Hinohara\, bringing back antique stencils\, sashiko thread and vintage Boro textiles. \nRob’s passion is in finding the new in the old\, building on the tradition and centuries of skill that Japanese textiles crafts have behind them. He believes in taking work in new directions by combining techniques and inventing his own forms. \nRob teaches a variety of Japanese textiles-based courses using indigo and natural dyes at various London venues. He is a short course tutor at West Dean College\, near Chichester\, where he teaches Shibori resist dyeing\, Katagami stencilling and Kogin embroidery. DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Moyozashi Sashiko: History\, types\, with examples of the different types presented and explained. Marking up of the patterns using the tools and patterns provided. Explanation of how to stitch Moyozashi sashiko patterns with guidance on starting and finishing knots and how to achieve a clean result. If students do not complete their project during the session\, they will be able to complete it at home with the materials afterwards. 1-2 patterns will be sewn depending on the speed of the sewers. Having discovered Shibori\, the ancient Japanese art of resist dyeing\, at West Dean college\, Rob went on to study in Japan under indigo guru\, Bryan Whitehead. In 2018 and 2019\, Rob returned to Japan to expand his Japanese textiles skills and teaching practice\, visiting Ise\, the home of Katagami stencilling and the Sashiko museum in Hinohara\, bringing back antique stencils\, sashiko thread and vintage Boro textiles. \nRob’s passion is in finding the new in the old\, building on the tradition and centuries of skill that Japanese textiles crafts have behind them. He believes in taking work in new directions by combining techniques and inventing his own forms. Rob teaches a variety of Japanese textiles-based courses using indigo and natural dyes at various London venues. He is a short course tutor at West Dean College\, near Chichester\, where he teaches Shibori resist dyeing\, Katagami stencilling and Kogin embroidery. Rob also teaches Shibori and Katagami at Old Bank Studios in Harwich and Handprinted in Bognor Regis. In the summer of 2022 his Sashiko embroidery and Boro mending were featured in the Semi-final of the Great British Sewing Bee as inspiration for the conversion challenge. DESCRIPTION:Come and have fun making coiled rope bowls and scrap bowls. From plain cotton rope to silk wrapped fancy bowls\, single colour delicate thread bowls to full colour scrap bowls. The techniques will be demonstrated and explained and you can make your own style\, shape and size of bowls. Warning – these are addictive but make wonderful presents!!! \nJann is an experienced designer\, teacher\, workshop leader and exhibiting textile artist. She will bring samples of the bowls so you can see what the possibilities are and take inspiration from them. \nEquipment and Materials\nSewing machine that can do zigzag stitch for the coil bowls and free motion stitch for the scrap bowls. (You do not need to be skilled at free machine work)\nBobbins and spare needles\nZigzag foot and free motion foot for the machine\nQuilting clips if you have them\nThread – any colour or weight as long as it will go in your machine\nScissors (and snips if you have them)\nEmbroidery hoop any size – some will be provided if you do not have one \nScrap material\nThis can be any shape or size. You can bring a variety of colours or decide on a restricted colour palette. A handful or small bagful\, cut offs from dress making or bits you can find from old projects – there will be some extra provided \nScrap thread\nIf you keep all the scrap ends of thread that you cut off when sewing this is a perfect way of using them. SUMMARY:Jenny Bennigsen - Workshop -  Treasure Boxes
DESCRIPTION:Considering the theme of treasure\, we will look at personal stories and memories and explore ways to capture them on a small textile piece. We will construct treasure boxes from cotton organdie in which to hide our treasured memories. Techniques used will include working with solufleece\, machine embroidery and appliqué\, fabric manipulation and some very basic origami. Participants will need to bring their own sewing machine and be reasonably competent at using it. \n \nMaterials List \nAlthough no previous experience of free machine embroidery is needed\, participants must be familiar with using a sewing machine.\nWe will explore ways to capture memories from our selected objects and practice free machine embroidery onto Solufleeece in the morning and then create the lid for our boxes using our designs in the afternoon. The base of the box can be finished at the workshop or at\n home. We will finish with a show and tell over home made cake that I will bring. (Please let me know if anyone attending has dietary considerations and\n I will do my best to accommodate them.\n\nKit list:\n\nElectric sewing machine in good working order. It must either have a drop feed dog function or a cover plate to prevent the feed dogs engaging.\nFree machine embroidery/darning foot suitable for use with your machine\nThree to four bobbins at least half full of any colour of thread plus at least one empty bobbin\n( See note about machine needles supplied in kit to purchase)\nWooden embroidery hoop – 7″(18cm) -9 “(23cm) in diameter. This should have a tightening screw that can take a screwdriver not just be hand tightened. The hoop can be bound with tape or unbound.\nScrewdriver for hoop if possible\nA small item (or items) which have sentimental attachment and/or evoke memories for example of a place\, a person or an event. These could be nature based\, textile based\, a household object or a personal item etc. but should be no bigger than something that would fit into a small shoebox but could be much smaller. Please do not bring anything of great monetary value. NB the memory you choose to work with should be something you are happy to share with the group.\nMachine threads in a selection of colours that may represent your memory/ object in some way or just be favourites. These do not have to be a perfect colour match to your object. They do not have to be specialist embroidery threads\, Coats Moon threads will work fine\, but better quality threads such as Guttermann will give a nicer finish. Try to include a neutral beige or light grey if possible and 5-10 other colours to play with. SUMMARY:Cas Holmes - ZOOM Workshop - Paper and Stitch
DESCRIPTION:An experimental workshop to explore the character and qualities of paper and other found material as a surface for working. A focus on machine and/or hand stitching as an extension of mark-making\, and various means of  manipulating\, attaching and joining. Some of the methods are adapted from Japanese paper techniques such as Momigami\, rub-crinkled paper techniques. The pieces resulting from this creative exploration could be used as a starting point for collage\, stitching\, 3-D or sculptural work. Include a simple adaptation of methods used in  Indian Kantha and Japanese Sashiko’ (Japanese rice grain stitch)  \nMethods are adapted from Japanese textile and paper-based techniques combined with ideas evolving from my personal practice. Most techniques can be equally applied to textiles as to paper.\n\nA typical workshop starts with a practical session to experimenting mark-making and other colour application techniques I use in conjunction with my found surfaces. This is followed by an exploration of methods used to join pieces together with adhesive mediums and stitch. As we progress participants will incorporate their own ideas and look at aspects of the design process including use of digital media and photography\, as well as creating sketches\, samples and notes for further reference. Students will leave the course with a sound basis of processes and working samplers\, or foundation pieces which they can continue to build on and develop.\n\nStudents are provided with a basic workshop list specific to the course which is largely centred on the creative re-use of the materials you may have available. Old domestic (not valuable) fabrics or scraps that can be recycled as well as copies of paper items\, maps\, photos and items gathered on your day to day journeys are useful things to collect..and they should all fit in one bag. This can reflect your theme\, a place special to you\, be colour inspired and/or  poems or words that express the feeling of your ideas. DESCRIPTION:This workshop\, postponed from the spring\, will now run over 2 TUESDAY EVENINGS in February 3rd and February 10th from 7pm to 9.30pm and introduces hanging books. \nFull instructions are given for assembling the book with students assembling their books. The remaining time will be spent hand stitching. The book is unlikely to be finished in the day depending on how much stitching students wish to do on their books. \nIntroduction and supply list \nThis is a process workshop.  A Hanging Book can be displayed on a wall or can be folded up to make a book.  The finished book will be double-sided. \nIn the first part of the workshop I will show you different ways you might decorate the pages of your book.  We can look at how each individual is going to sew their book   In the second part I will show you how to put a hanging book together.  Everything will be hand stitched. \nEveryone will learn the same process but each person’s book will be different\, based on their colour and fabric choice.  However I will show you different ways to finish a book which you can use if you decide to make more books. \nPlease be aware that you may not completely finish the book during the sessions – much will depend on how much decorative stitching you want to do and how much time you have between the two parts of the workshop. \nFabric choice \nI suggest you use a limited colour palette and choose fabrics that co-ordinate.  You can use bought cotton fabric or use cotton fabric you have dyed and printed.  The fabric shouldn’t be too highly patterned.  Alternatively you could use plain dyed fabric and print an image on it.  I will demonstrate how suitable stamps\, stencils and Thermofax screens could be used. \nRequirements: \nPlease have available \nFabrics as listed (list to be issued nearer the time) \nRuler \nFabric scissors \nPins\, Sewing kit \nCotton for tacking – Use a colour that isn’t in your fabric to make it easier to see to remove \nEmbroidery threads \nCamera \nPen\, pencil\, notebook \nAbout Bernice \nBernice trained as a primary school teacher and later became a church administrator.  She now concentrates on all things creative including facilitating a course on Creativity.\nAfter successfully completing City & Guilds Creative Embroidery\, she continued to work with textiles until Art Journaling and Mixed Media called. \nBernice particularly enjoys making books both in card and fabric and has taught online workshops on altered books and themed books via recorded videos.  She also works with textiles\, often involving the themes of canals or Venice.  More recent work has become more personal. \n\nBooking Terms and Conditions:\nThe fee is non-refundable if you cancel (unless another person can take your place.)\nWe occasionally have a waiting list for a workshop and if that is the case your place would be offered to the next person on the list. DESCRIPTION:This workshop is aimed at experimental printing with natural elements using leaves and flowers from the garden \nBy the end of the day we will have accumulated a number  of prints  which can be used as backgrounds for individual pieces of stitch work or used in collage and  patchwork with additional complimentary fabrics \nEquipment \nMain background fabric to be light/medium weight calico approx. 1-2 metres . \nOptional additional fabric which can be nice to work with could include. cottons\, cotton organza and duck canvas in plain or muted colours. \nAnother option if you like sketch booking or card making  you can  work with papers such as watercolour\, khadi\, cartridge\, brown\, old envelopes and maps \nA variety of leaves and flowers from the garden.
