SUMMARY:Jann Thorpe - Workshop - Coiled bowls and decorations
DESCRIPTION:Come and have fun making coiled rope bowls and scrap bowls. From plain cotton rope to silk wrapped fancy bowls\, single colour delicate thread bowls to full colour scrap bowls. The techniques will be demonstrated and explained and you can make your own style\, shape and size of bowls. Warning – these are addictive but make wonderful presents!!! \nJann is an experienced designer\, teacher\, workshop leader and exhibiting textile artist. She will bring samples of the bowls so you can see what the possibilities are and take inspiration from them. \nEquipment and Materials\nSewing machine that can do zigzag stitch for the coil bowls and free motion stitch for the scrap bowls. (You do not need to be skilled at free machine work)\nBobbins and spare needles\nZigzag foot and free motion foot for the machine\nQuilting clips if you have them\nThread – any colour or weight as long as it will go in your machine\nScissors (and snips if you have them)\nEmbroidery hoop any size – some will be provided if you do not have one \nScrap material\nThis can be any shape or size. You can bring a variety of colours or decide on a restricted colour palette. A handful or small bagful\, cut offs from dress making or bits you can find from old projects – there will be some extra provided \nScrap thread\nIf you keep all the scrap ends of thread that you cut off when sewing this is a perfect way of using them. DESCRIPTION:Catherine was born and raised in New Zealand but has spent most of her life living in the UK. \nSewing has always been a big part of her life\, her mother made all their clothes when they were young and then Catherine took over from the age of 11. Her father had been a Master Tailor in London pre and after WW1. \nAfter leaving architecture behind she found her passion in Textile Art. She has been creating\, exhibiting and teaching this for nearly 25 years in the UK and NZ\, teaching at the Knitting and Stitching Shows and Festival of Quilts and other shows and to groups around the country.  \nCatherine specialises in one off wall hangings\, textile pictures and garments made to commission and for sale.  \nIn this talk Catherine will describe her journey in sewing\, making clothes for herself and into creating pieces of Wearable Art. DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Moyozashi Sashiko: History\, types\, with examples of the different types presented and explained. Marking up of the patterns using the tools and patterns provided. Explanation of how to stitch Moyozashi sashiko patterns with guidance on starting and finishing knots and how to achieve a clean result. If students do not complete their project during the session\, they will be able to complete it at home with the materials afterwards. 1-2 patterns will be sewn depending on the speed of the sewers. In 2018 and 2019\, Rob returned to Japan to expand his Japanese textiles skills and teaching practice\, visiting Ise\, the home of Katagami stencilling and the Sashiko museum in Hinohara\, bringing back antique stencils\, sashiko thread and vintage Boro textiles. \nRob’s passion is in finding the new in the old\, building on the tradition and centuries of skill that Japanese textiles crafts have behind them. He believes in taking work in new directions by combining techniques and inventing his own forms. Rob teaches a variety of Japanese textiles-based courses using indigo and natural dyes at various London venues. He is a short course tutor at West Dean College\, near Chichester\, where he teaches Shibori resist dyeing\, Katagami stencilling and Kogin embroidery. DESCRIPTION:Having fun playing and stitching in circles  \nThis workshop is to let yourself free to experiment with stitch and texture a time to experiment with threads and fabrics.\nThe workshop can be done using hand stitch and or machine stitching.\nA background will be prepared by patching and or weaving remnants of fabrics to make an interesting surface to work with and add to. \nWe will then discuss a variety of stitches and surface textures to form a pattern of curved shapes  Stitches can be a combination of machine and hand you might want to use applique methods\, coiling and couching all ideas will be open for discussion\, even maybe the odd Suffolk puff. \nEquipment  \nSewing machine with a standard straight stitch foot and a machine embroidery foot. \nMachine embroidery frame if you like using them\, extension lead \nSewing kit usual hand stitching kit\, scissors etc. \n Background fabrics can be new or old remnants of cloth\, you can add pieces of lace or ribbon . A neutral or tonal palette works well. Enough to do an approximate 12×12 inches square all similar oblong 8 x14 inches \nWhen choosing your fabrics please test that a hand needle and thread can easily go through the fabric\, some woven fabrics are hard to hand stitch.\nA fine lightweight calico or similar about quarter of a metre. \nHand threads in colours you would like to work with in a variety of thickness for stitching and couching \nMachine threads in colours you would like to work with plus a neutral or tonal colour to secure the background fabrics. \nOptional extras\nCouching threads which could be soft strings\, garden twine\, dishcloth cotton\nButtons or other  small round objects which can be incorporated into the piece of work  e.g washers\, curtain rings\, \nN.B. DESCRIPTION:About the Artist\nJane works in mixed media\, collage and textiles.  She has travelled extensively with two very memorable trips to Antarctica in 2002 and 2020 where she fell in love with this cold but beautiful place.  Her work takes inspiration from landscape and memory whether it is a local walk or marvelling at icebergs.  She is fascinated by stone circles and the evidence of early people in the landscape. \nShe builds her work in layers starting with a base fabric and adding collage\, paint and stitch. She reuses and recycles fabric\, bringing the evidence of previous use (buttons\, unpicked seams\, darts etc)\, left over scraps and threads into her work. \nShe moved to Worcester in 2018 and joined the Bevere Gallery Artists Studios in November 2022. She regularly exhibits with the Midlands Textile Forum and is a member of On the Surface Group in Moseley\, Birmingham taking part in Birmingham Open Studios and of Stitch Together Textiles. \nSee her work on –  Instagram: @jatextileart  Facebook: www.facebook.com/JATextileArt \nMidlands Textile Forum https://www.midlandstextileforum.com/jane-arthur \nWorkshop\nThis workshop explores capturing a sense of place using a favourite walk or location.  We’ll work with images and maps of your favourite place to select fabrics with matches of colour\, texture and pattern with the aim of creating a collage approx A4 in size which we will then work further with additional fabric and hand stitch. \nPreparation \nWhat you need to do before you come to the workshop –Take some photographs of the walk/location – what is your favourite spot/view? \n\nRemind yourself of your favourite season for walking there\, time of day\, how it makes you feel to be there\nPrint off a google-earth view\nLook at OS maps\, information on the walk/location.\n\nBring your images\, maps\, notes to the workshop \n What to bring with you \n\nSewing kit\, scissors etc\nEmbroidery/stitch threads in different weights\nA4 size (approx) backing fabric – recycle old napkins\, sheets or shirts if you can. Do not make your backing fabric too heavy as building up layers will make the piece hard to stitch through – or so thin that it is too flimsy!\nSmall selection of light/medium weight fabrics (cotton\, linen\, polycotton etc) that match the colours/patterns/texture of your walk. She reuses and recycles fabric\, bringing the evidence of previous use (buttons\, unpicked seams\, darts etc)\, left over scraps and threads into her work. \nShe moved to Worcester in 2018 and joined the Bevere Gallery Artists Studios in November 2022. She regularly exhibits with the Midlands Textile Forum and is a member of On the Surface Group in Moseley\, Birmingham taking part in Birmingham Open Studios and of Stitch Together Textiles. \nJane has been fascinated (not to say obsessed) with the history of exploration in Antarctica for over 30 years.  She visited twice and fell in love with this cold\, but beautiful\, place.  Her first visit in 2002 kick started a renewed interest in working with textiles as she tried to capture the strangeness of bergs and the colour of ice.  She created a textile diary on her second visit in 2020 (just before Covid19 shut everything down) and has produced many more works since.  She also become a trustee of the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust – the trust looks after 6 heritage sites on the Antarctic peninsula including Port Lockroy\, the penguin post office. \nThe talk is free to members of Textile Explorers\nDoors open at 7pm

The theme of this workshop is woodland and this will inform your ideas about colour and mood in your work. \nOn this 1 day\, intensive workshop participants will be introduced to techniques in fabric collage and detailed ‘Slow Stitch’ of illustrated elements. Emphasis will be placed on colour\, composition and using stitch to ‘draw’ in thread. \nInspired by the array of examples of different approaches to hand stitch and fabric collage that you will be shown\, this workshop will allow you to gain the confidence to assemble your own collage of fabrics and bring them to a cohesive surface through stitch. It will also include the development of charming stitched motifs to apply onto a ground. \nNigel uses a broad palette of textile techniques in his work and assures you that this workshop can be undertaken entirely in machine or hand stitch\, or indeed any combination. \nEveryone will be able to chose from a selection of original printed fabrics (unique to this workshop) that have been created from Nigel’s hand-drawn illustrations of both woodland creatures and birds. Developing your own individual compositions you will be encouraged to introduce other textile elements that ensure your own unique response to the challenges of this workshop. A  broad selection will be supplied\, but this is a chance to integrate your own vintage fragments\, scraps from charity shop finds or even your unfinished samples /fabric prints/eco dyeing from previous workshops. \nNigel will bring a collection of his own work to inspire you\, and even some drawings and prints available to buy. \nOne day workshop. \nThe techniques shown are inspired by cultural and ethnic textile philosophies\, where the life story of the cloth is inextricably linked with its new purpose. DESCRIPTION:The art of decorative design \nThis is a 2 part workshop run by Angela Oswald\, an experienced textile tutor and member of Textile Explorers. \n“There are many ways of decorating a piece of fabric to develop a pictorial piece of art. DESCRIPTION:The art of decorative design \nThis is a 2 part workshop run by Angela Oswald\, an experienced textile tutor and member of Textile Explorers.\nNOTE:  It is highly recommended that you book on both days of the workshop… bookings for Day 2 open at the same time as Day 1 CORRECTION 14th December… it has now been decided to change the booking date for part 2…. \n“There are many ways of decorating a piece of fabric to develop a pictorial piece of art. We will be looking at a combination of drawing\, painting\, collage and stitch to make a unique textile art piece. \nTo achieve this I would like us to use nature as an inspiration. Think of a tree branch then add leaves\, fruits and flowers. This can be based on something in real nature or totally imagined. The workshop is about having fun with colour and stitch.” \nStitching – we will be using free machine embroidery alongside hand stitching. \nDay one will be working on the design\, painting and collaging to be ready for stitch. We will also experiment with some free machine embroidery ideas. \nDay two we will be fully immersed in free machine embroidery\, hand stitch and adding embellishments. \nMATERIALS LIST\nHere is the list of requirements – which can be downloaded The art of decorative design LIST  \nDay one\nA sewing machine that can drop its feed dogs. A free machine embroidery and basic stitching foot.\nSpare needles and  bobbins \nInspiration source material leaves\, fruit\, vegetables and flowers. This could be in springtime with flowers and buds or autumn using berries and seeds pods. Images can be taken from photographs or just use your imagination. \nPencil\, sharpener\,  tracing paper\,  paper scissors\, masking tape.\n*drawing paper\n*Acrylic paint and soft brushes water pot\, kitchen roll.\nPainting will be optional; you can just use fabric collage techniques. \n*Background fabric\, we will be working in a roughly 16 inches / 40 cm square  this will depend on your design.\nFabric scissors\nFabrics for collage – small pieces of cotton\, can be printed or plain. The more patterns\, the more fun.\nBond-a -web\, baking parchment.\nIron and ironing pad if you wish to use your own.\nMachine embroidery threads either cottons or polyesters again in as many colours as you wish to use. \nIf you wish to work in a colour scheme of your own choice\, please bring fabrics and threads based on the  chosen colour scheme e.g. spring colours\, autumn colours or even a kaleidoscope of colours. \n* Note Angela will have these available at a small extra cost – payable directly to her by cash on the day.\nBackground fabric will be a heavy duck cotton to take the paint and handling through the machine. DESCRIPTION:Photo Mosaic Siân Martin\nSnickers Mosaic Siân Martin\nSiân Martin has been using different methods of ASSEMBLAGE within her textile art pieces to create articulated textiles that move and flow. Bring your own thoughts and memories together in your own textile investigations. \nThe word ‘assemblage’ describes a textile that is created by combining multiples of different materials; fabrics\, papers\, threads\, photos\, abandoned samples\, surfaces that hold memories\, any item that has meaning for your story that can be stitched into. \nFragments and multiples can be made into a whole. Machine stitching\, hand lacing and soluble materials will be used to link these fragments\, using the stitch to link and decorate the fragments. \nThis workshop will take you through different methods of selecting materials\, disassembling them and then re-assembling them in imaginative ways that tell a personal story. \nSiân is a teacher and textile artist who exhibits with the 62 Group and is currently chair of the Textile Study Group. Accompanying her dialog\, Linda will share images of her machine embroideries whose naiveté and charm will capture all audiences of any age \nAbout the Speaker\nLinda spent her childhood drawing and making things. She learnt how to use a hand cranked sewing machine when she was very young and loved the rhythm of its stitching. Growing up in historical Hastings she was intrigued by the Bayeux Tapestry with its stitched story telling.\nAfter studying printed textiles at Winchester School of Art she combined both her love of drawing and machine stitch to make machine embroideries on a splendid electric sewing machine and in 1989 she set up her studio practice. Now working from the Sorting Office Studios in Eastleigh\, Hampshire\, Linda continues to makes her one-off\, Machine Embroideries using her distinctive\, unique style. Her colourful\, naïve\, and narrative embroideries contain figures and animals set in the outdoors all with their own stories to tell.\nHer work is successfully exhibited and held in public and private collections such as those of the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Arts Council Southeast\, she is the author of two books “Creative Machine Embroidery published by A&C Black and “Stitched Pictures “published by Crowood Books as well as being featured in many textile and lifestyle magazines she has also appeared on Kirstie’s Handmade Britain.
