DESCRIPTION:This workshop is aimed at refining the skills  of mixing and blending wool tops with additional embellishments to achieve colourful and blended surfaces \nThese surfaces can be additionally used for collage and applique which can be further enhanced with hand and machine stitching . \nEquipment \nEmbellishing machine\, spare needles\, extension cable\, scissors \nWool tops in an assortment of colours as many or whatever you have available. We will be using the colours of the landscape for inspiration \nNylon nets the type that under skirts are made from not net curtains\, in whatever colours you have available. SUMMARY:Angela Oswald – Workshop - Printing with Nature
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is aimed at experimental printing with natural elements using leaves and flowers from the garden \nBy the end of the day we will have accumulated a number  of prints  which can be used as backgrounds for individual pieces of stitch work or used in collage and  patchwork with additional complimentary fabrics \nEquipment \nMain background fabric to be light/medium weight calico approx. 1-2 metres . \nOptional additional fabric which can be nice to work with could include. cottons\, cotton organza and duck canvas in plain or muted colours. \nAnother option if you like sketch booking or card making  you can  work with papers such as watercolour\, khadi\, cartridge\, brown\, old envelopes and maps \nA variety of leaves and flowers from the garden. Leaves are best if they have quite prominent texture and or veins. SUMMARY:Toni Buckby - Zoom Talk - History of Blackwork
DESCRIPTION:Blackwork embroidery\, with its striking black silk thread on white linen\, was one of the most fashionable techniques of the 16th and early 17th centuries. Found on intimate garments and household textiles\, it shifted in style and method over the hundred years of its popularity. Today\, only a handful of fragile examples survive. Those that remain are in various stages of disintegration\, due to the iron-based fixatives once used in black dye. Because of this\, portraits from the period provide some of the richest records of Blackwork embroidery in use. This talk will trace the stylistic development and application of blackwork through these surviving examples and portrait evidence. \n \nAbout Toni \nToni Buckby is a Sheffield-based artist working with traditional textile techniques\, experimental digital technologies\, and collaborative making. Her practice explores the value of labour\, the visibility of authorship\, and how practical knowledge is created and shared. \nSpecialising in fine hand embroidery\, Toni is currently undertaking a PhD with Sheffield Hallam University and the Victoria & Albert Museum. DESCRIPTION:Learn how to stitch a 3D tree using machine embroidery on dissolvable film.  Plant the tree into a vintage tea cup decorated with a hand stitched and needle felted base. \nREQUIREMENTS LIST: \n\nSewing machine with the ability to do free motion embroidery & extension table if you have one.   Machine instruction book.   Extension lead if we are using a large hall.\nDarning/embroidery foot to fit the machine + at least 4 bobbins.\nAn embroidery hoop preferably 8”.\nMachine embroidery threads –  ordinary Sylko type threads or Madeira Viscose/Rayon 40 or similar.  In various shades of green and brown – think tree colours.   If you want to do an Autumn tree\, bring threads in those shades/tones.\nA few hand threads in plant & flower colours – green\, pink\, blue etc.    Perle is good but you can use stranded cotton.  Thicker threads such as wool also can be used in small areas.\n\n \n\nA few small pieces of soft fabric in colours to match your cup – scrim\, merino wool if you have any.\nBasic sewing kit – small\, sharp scissors\, spare machine needles\, hand embroidery needles including large eyed ones for wool\, small screw driver for tightening hoop.\nFine Felt tip pen in a dark colour.\nTeacup or similar vessel.   Size 7 – 9cms diameter.   It does not have to a picture on it.  A milk jug is not usually suitable because of its shape.\nFelting needle and foam or brush mat.   A Clover Needle felting tool is useful.    We can share these items so don’t buy specially for this workshop.\nNotebook and pen if you wish to take notes.\nNB There will be a charge of £5 per person payable to the tutor to cover specialist items such as dissolvable film\, pre-felt\, dyed scrim\, merino wools\, wire\, Oasis etc which she will provide.  Some cups will be available to purchase approx. £4 – £6 if required.\n\nAbout Jane \n \nJane Fairweather lives in south Shropshire in an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) and takes her inspiration f \nrom her garden and surrounding countryside. \nHer Teacup textiles are set in vintage crockery painted with idealised landscape scenes. SUMMARY:Anne Brooke - Workshop - Hoop Hoop to Stitch
DESCRIPTION:A New Dimension in Textile Backgrounds \nReady to take your stitching to the next level—literally? Whether you are looking for a sequel to our Painted & Stitched session or you want a fresh\, experimental starting point for a brand-new project\, this workshop is all about structural depth. \nBy working with a double hoop setup\, we move away from flat surfaces and begin building a layered\, sculptural environment ready for your needle. \nBrief overview of the day. In the morning we look at the construction and assembly of our hoop in a hoop and begin to explore a range of painting and mark making techniques to address the issue of scary white fabric. In the afternoon we will continue to develop the background and begin to explore a range of stitching. Depending on how quick you stitch\, it is unlikely you will complete your piece on the day. But Anne will go through everything you need to know in the afternoon. \nMaterials – \nMust haves \n● Apron and gloves if you don’t want to get paint/inks on your hands (will wash off) ● Table cover (bin bag is ok) ● Hair Dryer (to dry piece as we go along) ● White cotton fabric 60CM X 60CM(not too thick) and pieces approx 20cm x 10cm (for sampling) ● 2 x embroidery hoop – 12 inch quilter hoop(this is deeper than an embroidery hoop) and 6 inch embroidery hoop. YOU ARE ABLE TO ORDER THESE FROM ANNE BEFORE THE WORKSHOP. Cost for both hoops £19\, payment for these are due when ordered. Details about how to order will be available early next year. \nWater pot\, palette and selection of brushes (household / artist etc) ● Any art materials you like using e.g. water colours\, inks\, inktense pencils/blocks (I don’t use acrylic) fabric paints or anything else you want to try out ● Test pot of emulsion\, I use white/pale grey but feel free to bring any others you have at home. ● Hand sewing kit. ● Any threads you may want to use\, I use machine thread and embroidery thread.(think of a colourway to work in on the day) ● Any buttons\, beads and embellishments you may want to add to your piece. \nAnne will have ● A selection of sample pieces for inspiration ● A range of brushes and hand made tools to try out ● Kitchen roll ● A hair dryer ● A range of art materials to use ● Tester pots of emulsion ● Threads ● A selection of embellishments ( to purchase on the day) ● Plus anything else I can think of. \nImportant Notice: Copyright & Intellectual Property We love sharing creativity\, but please note that all workshop materials\, handouts\, designs\, and unique techniques taught during the session are the intellectual property of Anne. ● Workshop Content: The project designs\, imagery\, and structural steps provided by Anne are for personal use only and may not be resold\, taught\, or redistributed commercially. ● Photography & Display: You are more than welcome to take photos of Anne’s samples and work for your own personal record an of course of your own progress and finished pieces! SUMMARY:Sue Lawty - Zoom Talk - Textile Travels in India & Bhutan
DESCRIPTION:A vibrantly illustrated talk visiting two regions of textile excellence. Locked in the foothills of the mighty Himalaya\, The Buddhist Kingdom of Bhutan is a nation of stunning landscapes\, colourful festivals and an enduring tradition of handwoven\, highly patterned textiles. In India we visit ancient desert villages and wonderful families to explore weaving\, bandhani dyeing\, printing\, embroidery and more. Both are extremely exciting and stimulating countries to travel through. \nAbout Sue \nSue Lawty is a highly experienced artist\, designer and teacher. She constructs textiles using raphia\, hemp and lead\, and makes drawings and assemblages using tiny stones\, creating a kind of pixelated cloth. \nIn 2014 Lawty held a prestigious Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship in Washington DC and New York.  She has been Artist in Residence at the School of Earth & Environment\, the University of Leeds and in 2023/24 held a three-month IASPIS International Artist Residency in Stockholm\, Sweden. \nSue Lawty is also a keen fell runner and an accomplished trekker\, leading both hard mountain treks and specialist textile trips to Bhutan\, India\, Nepal and Central Asia. SUMMARY:Alice Fox - Talk -  Allotment Materials
DESCRIPTION:Alice will tell us about the various plant fibres she works with\, which are sourced from her allotment. Describing the stages from seed or seedling\, through to harvest\, processing and storage\, Alice will take us on a seasonal journey with various fibres\, including cultivated and wild plants. She will show examples of how those fibres are then used in the surfaces and structures she creates for gallery exhibition. \nAbout Alice \nMy process-led practice is based on personal engagement with landscape and has sustainability at its heart. I am fascinated by the detail of organic things and my work celebrates and carries an essence of what I experience in the natural world. My background in physical geography and nature conservation underpins my artistic practice. \nI work with natural fibres and gathered materials\, employing natural dyes\, stitch\, weave and soft basketry techniques. These elements come together in different combinations to create grouped surfaces and structures. Found items form the focus of my response to a landscape\, forming tangible links to the places they were gathered from. I take an experimental approach to these found objects: by engaging with the materials that I find\, manipulating them and experimenting\, I learn about their properties\, boundaries and possibilities. This exploration becomes a collaboration between object and artist. My allotment plot forms the focus of my work\, providing an abundant source of materials. Read more about Plot 105 in Projects. \nI studied Contemporary Surface Design & Textiles at Bradford School of Arts & Media and completed an MA in Creative Practice at Leeds Arts University. I work from the allotment and my studio in Saltaire\, West Yorkshire\, UK. I exhibit\, lecture and teach workshops nationally and internationally.
