SUMMARY:Cas Holmes - ZOOM Workshop - Paper and Stitch
DESCRIPTION:An experimental workshop to explore the character and qualities of paper and other found material as a surface for working. A focus on machine and/or hand stitching as an extension of mark-making\, and various means of  manipulating\, attaching and joining. Some of the methods are adapted from Japanese paper techniques such as Momigami\, rub-crinkled paper techniques. The pieces resulting from this creative exploration could be used as a starting point for collage\, stitching\, 3-D or sculptural work. Include a simple adaptation of methods used in  Indian Kantha and Japanese Sashiko’ (Japanese rice grain stitch)  \nMethods are adapted from Japanese textile and paper-based techniques combined with ideas evolving from my personal practice. Most techniques can be equally applied to textiles as to paper.\n\nA typical workshop starts with a practical session to experimenting mark-making and other colour application techniques I use in conjunction with my found surfaces. This is followed by an exploration of methods used to join pieces together with adhesive mediums and stitch. As we progress participants will incorporate their own ideas and look at aspects of the design process including use of digital media and photography\, as well as creating sketches\, samples and notes for further reference. Students will leave the course with a sound basis of processes and working samplers\, or foundation pieces which they can continue to build on and develop.\n\nStudents are provided with a basic workshop list specific to the course which is largely centred on the creative re-use of the materials you may have available. Old domestic (not valuable) fabrics or scraps that can be recycled as well as copies of paper items\, maps\, photos and items gathered on your day to day journeys are useful things to collect..and they should all fit in one bag. This can reflect your theme\, a place special to you\, be colour inspired and/or  poems or words that express the feeling of your ideas. DESCRIPTION:This time of year we are aware of all the different shapes bare trees have against a winter sky so let’s take advantage of them  \nThis is a mixed media workshop where we will be loosely painting our backgrounds (don’t be put off by painting it will be fun to do )then experimenting with different ways to depict winter trees in a landscape. This work lends itself to free machine embroidery but can also be interpreted in hand stitch or a mixture of both. For stitch inspiration  look at Lesley Richmond\, Fiona Robertson\, Patricia Kelly’s windswept trees. For mood/colour  inspiration look at Helen Terry and photographer Mark Munroe-Preston. SUMMARY:Bernice Hopper - ZOOM Workshop - Hanging Books (2 Parts)
DESCRIPTION:This workshop\, postponed from the spring\, will now run over 2 TUESDAY EVENINGS in February 3rd and February 10th from 7pm to 9.30pm and introduces hanging books. \nFull instructions are given for assembling the book with students assembling their books. The remaining time will be spent hand stitching. The book is unlikely to be finished in the day depending on how much stitching students wish to do on their books. \nIntroduction and supply list \nThis is a process workshop.  A Hanging Book can be displayed on a wall or can be folded up to make a book.  The finished book will be double-sided. \nIn the first part of the workshop I will show you different ways you might decorate the pages of your book.  We can look at how each individual is going to sew their book   In the second part I will show you how to put a hanging book together.  Everything will be hand stitched. \nEveryone will learn the same process but each person’s book will be different\, based on their colour and fabric choice.  However I will show you different ways to finish a book which you can use if you decide to make more books. \nPlease be aware that you may not completely finish the book during the sessions – much will depend on how much decorative stitching you want to do and how much time you have between the two parts of the workshop. \nFabric choice \nI suggest you use a limited colour palette and choose fabrics that co-ordinate.  You can use bought cotton fabric or use cotton fabric you have dyed and printed.  The fabric shouldn’t be too highly patterned.  Alternatively you could use plain dyed fabric and print an image on it.  I will demonstrate how suitable stamps\, stencils and Thermofax screens could be used. \nRequirements: \nPlease have available \nFabrics as listed (list to be issued nearer the time) \nRuler \nFabric scissors \nPins\, Sewing kit \nCotton for tacking – Use a colour that isn’t in your fabric to make it easier to see to remove \nEmbroidery threads \nCamera \nPen\, pencil\, notebook \nAbout Bernice \nBernice trained as a primary school teacher and later became a church administrator.  She now concentrates on all things creative including facilitating a course on Creativity.\nAfter successfully completing City & Guilds Creative Embroidery\, she continued to work with textiles until Art Journaling and Mixed Media called. \nBernice particularly enjoys making books both in card and fabric and has taught online workshops on altered books and themed books via recorded videos.  She also works with textiles\, often involving the themes of canals or Venice.  More recent work has become more personal. \n\nBooking Terms and Conditions:\nThe fee is non-refundable if you cancel (unless another person can take your place.)\nWe occasionally have a waiting list for a workshop and if that is the case your place would be offered to the next person on the list. DESCRIPTION:This workshop is aimed at experimental printing with natural elements using leaves and flowers from the garden \nBy the end of the day we will have accumulated a number  of prints  which can be used as backgrounds for individual pieces of stitch work or used in collage and  patchwork with additional complimentary fabrics \nEquipment \nMain background fabric to be light/medium weight calico approx. 1-2 metres . \nOptional additional fabric which can be nice to work with could include. cottons\, cotton organza and duck canvas in plain or muted colours. \nAnother option if you like sketch booking or card making  you can  work with papers such as watercolour\, khadi\, cartridge\, brown\, old envelopes and maps \nA variety of leaves and flowers from the garden. Leaves are best if they have quite prominent texture and or veins. SUMMARY:Toni Buckby - Zoom Talk - History of Blackwork
DESCRIPTION:Blackwork embroidery\, with its striking black silk thread on white linen\, was one of the most fashionable techniques of the 16th and early 17th centuries. Found on intimate garments and household textiles\, it shifted in style and method over the hundred years of its popularity. Today\, only a handful of fragile examples survive. Those that remain are in various stages of disintegration\, due to the iron-based fixatives once used in black dye. Because of this\, portraits from the period provide some of the richest records of Blackwork embroidery in use. This talk will trace the stylistic development and application of blackwork through these surviving examples and portrait evidence. \n \nAbout Toni \nToni Buckby is a Sheffield-based artist working with traditional textile techniques\, experimental digital technologies\, and collaborative making. Her practice explores the value of labour\, the visibility of authorship\, and how practical knowledge is created and shared. \nSpecialising in fine hand embroidery\, Toni is currently undertaking a PhD with Sheffield Hallam University and the Victoria & Albert Museum. DESCRIPTION:Stitched Paper Gloves: I demonstrate how to patchworking papers to create the ‘fabric’ for the gloves\, show ideas to decorate such as paper Suffolk Puffs\, mini paper roses and decorative hand stitches like Cross Stitch\, Blanket Stitch and a beautiful Venetian Needlelace stitched edge. I also show you how to put these together and construct the gloves\, as well as covered bindings\, button loops and covered buttons to add fastening. DESCRIPTION:Learn how to stitch a 3D tree using machine embroidery on dissolvable film.  Plant the tree into a vintage tea cup decorated with a hand stitched and needle felted base. \nREQUIREMENTS LIST: \n\nSewing machine with the ability to do free motion embroidery & extension table if you have one.   Machine instruction book.   Extension lead if we are using a large hall.\nDarning/embroidery foot to fit the machine + at least 4 bobbins.\nAn embroidery hoop preferably 8”.\nMachine embroidery threads –  ordinary Sylko type threads or Madeira Viscose/Rayon 40 or similar.  In various shades of green and brown – think tree colours.   If you want to do an Autumn tree\, bring threads in those shades/tones.\nA few hand threads in plant & flower colours – green\, pink\, blue etc.    Perle is good but you can use stranded cotton.  Thicker threads such as wool also can be used in small areas.\n\n \n\nA few small pieces of soft fabric in colours to match your cup – scrim\, merino wool if you have any.\nBasic sewing kit – small\, sharp scissors\, spare machine needles\, hand embroidery needles including large eyed ones for wool\, small screw driver for tightening hoop.\nFine Felt tip pen in a dark colour.\nTeacup or similar vessel.   Size 7 – 9cms diameter.   It does not have to a picture on it.  A milk jug is not usually suitable because of its shape.\nFelting needle and foam or brush mat.   A Clover Needle felting tool is useful.    We can share these items so don’t buy specially for this workshop.\nNotebook and pen if you wish to take notes.\nNB There will be a charge of £5 per person payable to the tutor to cover specialist items such as dissolvable film\, pre-felt\, dyed scrim\, merino wools\, wire\, Oasis etc which she will provide.  Some cups will be available to purchase approx. £4 – £6 if required.\n\nAbout Jane \n \nJane Fairweather lives in south Shropshire in an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) and takes her inspiration f \nrom her garden and surrounding countryside. \nHer Teacup textiles are set in vintage crockery painted with idealised landscape scenes. DESCRIPTION:Textured embroidery\, using fabric manipulation and some basic embroidery stitches. Create a textured piece of embroidery which can be displayed in a small embroidery hoop. DESCRIPTION:An introductory talk by Janice – sharing her work and approach to teaching. \n  \nAbout Janice \nJanice Botterill is an artist\, writer and tutor. She uses the techniques and processes of traditional embroidery and darning to make drawings\, collages and quilts. Working towards a zero-waste practice\, she works with pre-loved\, repurposed or natural fabrics and threads. She prefers the slower\, quieter practice of hand stitching\, focusing on just a handful of signature stitches in her work. \nShe is very interested in the crossover between textiles and other creative practices and in particular how contemporary artists\, collectors and galleries are blurring the traditional barriers between stitching and embroidery (often seen as domestic and craft techniques) and fine art practices such as sculpture\, painting and installation. \nShe often combines her stitched work with writing and printmaking and is relearning how to use a vintage treadle sewing machine to expand her practice. DESCRIPTION:A New Dimension in Textile Backgrounds \nReady to take your stitching to the next level—literally? Whether you are looking for a sequel to our Painted & Stitched session or you want a fresh\, experimental starting point for a brand-new project\, this workshop is all about structural depth. \nBy working with a double hoop setup\, we move away from flat surfaces and begin building a layered\, sculptural environment ready for your needle. \nBrief overview of the day. In the morning we look at the construction and assembly of our hoop in a hoop and begin to explore a range of painting and mark making techniques to address the issue of scary white fabric. In the afternoon we will continue to develop the background and begin to explore a range of stitching. Depending on how quick you stitch\, it is unlikely you will complete your piece on the day. But Anne will go through everything you need to know in the afternoon. \nMaterials – \nMust haves \n● Apron and gloves if you don’t want to get paint/inks on your hands (will wash off) ● Table cover (bin bag is ok) ● Hair Dryer (to dry piece as we go along) ● White cotton fabric 60CM X 60CM(not too thick) and pieces approx 20cm x 10cm (for sampling) ● 2 x embroidery hoop – 12 inch quilter hoop(this is deeper than an embroidery hoop) and 6 inch embroidery hoop. YOU ARE ABLE TO ORDER THESE FROM ANNE BEFORE THE WORKSHOP. Cost for both hoops £19\, payment for these are due when ordered.
