DESCRIPTION:Textured embroidery\, using fabric manipulation and some basic embroidery stitches. Create a textured piece of embroidery which can be displayed in a small embroidery hoop. The piece will look at texture\, playing with simple fabric manipulation & some basic embroidery stitches within a limited colour range; this technique can then be explored to create various pieces. \nMaterials needed: \nBasic sewing kit (needles\, scissors etc.) You will also need a base/background fabric; to fit your *hoop\, a neutral shade is best in medium weight calico or similar. \n*An embroidery hoop at a size of around 4-6 inches \nOther materials \nI can supply a pack of rust dyed fabric and lace\, etc. if you would like to use this colour palette at a cost of £20 – to be pre ordered. \nAlternatively\, you may wish to use your own fabrics\, in your preferred colour range. \nYou will need a selection of embroidery threads in your chosen colour. \n \nYou can of course use any special fabrics\, button\, beads etc. that you would like to incorporate. \nAbout Deb \nDeb Cooper is a Mixed Media Textile Artist based in the North East of England. Using natural dyes\, ink\, mark-making\, and stitch\, she combines small sections of recycled fibres\, old papers\, and vintage textiles\, including deconstructed lace. Sometimes\, machine embroidery is added to the mix\, but the key element is hand stitch\, which Deb uses to unite the layers. Deb has a love of aged and worn materials. DESCRIPTION:An introductory talk by Janice – sharing her work and approach to teaching. \n  \nAbout Janice \nJanice Botterill is an artist\, writer and tutor. She uses the techniques and processes of traditional embroidery and darning to make drawings\, collages and quilts. Working towards a zero-waste practice\, she works with pre-loved\, repurposed or natural fabrics and threads. She prefers the slower\, quieter practice of hand stitching\, focusing on just a handful of signature stitches in her work. \nShe is very interested in the crossover between textiles and other creative practices and in particular how contemporary artists\, collectors and galleries are blurring the traditional barriers between stitching and embroidery (often seen as domestic and craft techniques) and fine art practices such as sculpture\, painting and installation. \nShe often combines her stitched work with writing and printmaking and is relearning how to use a vintage treadle sewing machine to expand her practice. She is a member of several South West UK textile groups and shares her enthusiasm and knowledge of embroidery and hand stitching through teaching and facilitating workshops. DESCRIPTION:A New Dimension in Textile Backgrounds \nReady to take your stitching to the next level—literally? Whether you are looking for a sequel to our Painted & Stitched session or you want a fresh\, experimental starting point for a brand-new project\, this workshop is all about structural depth. \nBy working with a double hoop setup\, we move away from flat surfaces and begin building a layered\, sculptural environment ready for your needle. \nBrief overview of the day. In the morning we look at the construction and assembly of our hoop in a hoop and begin to explore a range of painting and mark making techniques to address the issue of scary white fabric. In the afternoon we will continue to develop the background and begin to explore a range of stitching. Depending on how quick you stitch\, it is unlikely you will complete your piece on the day. But Anne will go through everything you need to know in the afternoon. \nMaterials – \nMust haves \n● Apron and gloves if you don’t want to get paint/inks on your hands (will wash off) ● Table cover (bin bag is ok) ● Hair Dryer (to dry piece as we go along) ● White cotton fabric 60CM X 60CM(not too thick) and pieces approx 20cm x 10cm (for sampling) ● 2 x embroidery hoop – 12 inch quilter hoop(this is deeper than an embroidery hoop) and 6 inch embroidery hoop. YOU ARE ABLE TO ORDER THESE FROM ANNE BEFORE THE WORKSHOP. Cost for both hoops £19\, payment for these are due when ordered. DESCRIPTION:A vibrantly illustrated talk visiting two regions of textile excellence. Locked in the foothills of the mighty Himalaya\, The Buddhist Kingdom of Bhutan is a nation of stunning landscapes\, colourful festivals and an enduring tradition of handwoven\, highly patterned textiles. In India we visit ancient desert villages and wonderful families to explore weaving\, bandhani dyeing\, printing\, embroidery and more. Both are extremely exciting and stimulating countries to travel through. \nAbout Sue \nSue Lawty is a highly experienced artist\, designer and teacher. She constructs textiles using raphia\, hemp and lead\, and makes drawings and assemblages using tiny stones\, creating a kind of pixelated cloth. \nIn 2014 Lawty held a prestigious Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship in Washington DC and New York.  She has been Artist in Residence at the School of Earth & Environment\, the University of Leeds and in 2023/24 held a three-month IASPIS International Artist Residency in Stockholm\, Sweden. \nSue Lawty is also a keen fell runner and an accomplished trekker\, leading both hard mountain treks and specialist textile trips to Bhutan\, India\, Nepal and Central Asia. SUMMARY:Alice Fox - Talk -  Allotment Materials
DESCRIPTION:Alice will tell us about the various plant fibres she works with\, which are sourced from her allotment. Describing the stages from seed or seedling\, through to harvest\, processing and storage\, Alice will take us on a seasonal journey with various fibres\, including cultivated and wild plants. She will show examples of how those fibres are then used in the surfaces and structures she creates for gallery exhibition. \nAbout Alice \nMy process-led practice is based on personal engagement with landscape and has sustainability at its heart. I am fascinated by the detail of organic things and my work celebrates and carries an essence of what I experience in the natural world. My background in physical geography and nature conservation underpins my artistic practice. \nI work with natural fibres and gathered materials\, employing natural dyes\, stitch\, weave and soft basketry techniques. These elements come together in different combinations to create grouped surfaces and structures. Found items form the focus of my response to a landscape\, forming tangible links to the places they were gathered from. I take an experimental approach to these found objects: by engaging with the materials that I find\, manipulating them and experimenting\, I learn about their properties\, boundaries and possibilities. This exploration becomes a collaboration between object and artist. My allotment plot forms the focus of my work\, providing an abundant source of materials. DESCRIPTION:Textiles and clothing are representative of the economy\, society\, and each of us personally. \nI will discuss my textile background\,16 years as a textile lecturer\, love of embroidery and embellishment and how I use it as a vehicle to tell personal stories and highlight issues of sustainability. \nI will bring a series of garments\, accompanying sketchbooks and artwork to explain my techniques and explorations and how upcycling\, visible mending  and sustainability are now at the forefront of my work. \nAbout Rachel \n\n\n\nI trained as fashion and textile designer at Loughborough. This was followed by some years in the textile industry designing for store groups in the Midlands. I moved to Cheshire in 1991 and started my own business painting murals and designing greetings cards. \nIn 2006 I trained as a textile lecturer and worked in Further Education for 16 years. \nIn 202I   I left F.E and set up independently utilizing stitch with community groups around Cheshire\, teaching sustainable textile workshops\, mending workshops\, giving talks and creating conceptual garments. \nI have exhibited at the Grosvenor Museum\, Chester Cathedral\, Castle Park Frodsham\, Willow Gallery Oswestry\, Editions\, Liverpool and had multiple solo exhibitions. \nIn 2021 I was asked to become resident artist for Tarporley and since then have facilitated a number of art projects for the  village. \n \nWebsite: http://www.racheldaviesstudio.co.uk \nThe talk is free to members of Textile Explorers
