SUMMARY:Bernice Hopper - ZOOM Talk - An Abundance of Fabric Books
DESCRIPTION:An in-depth look at the many fabric books that Bernice has made. She make books in a variety of ways and these processes will be explained as we look at each book. \nAbout the Artist \nBernice trained as a primary school teacher and later became a church administrator.  She now concentrates on all things creative including facilitating a course on Creativity.\nAfter successfully completing City & Guilds Creative Embroidery\, she continued to work with textiles until Art Journaling and Mixed Media called. \nBernice particularly enjoys making books both in card and fabric and has taught online workshops on altered books and themed books via recorded videos.  She also works with textiles\, often involving the themes of canals or Venice.  More recent work has become more personal.

SUMMARY:Jane Arthur - Talk - "Antartica in Stitch"
DESCRIPTION:Jane works in mixed media\, collage and textiles.  She has travelled extensively with two very memorable trips to Antarctica in 2002 and 2020 where she fell in love with this cold but beautiful place.  Her work takes inspiration from landscape and memory whether it is a local walk or marvelling at icebergs.  She is fascinated by stone circles and the evidence of early people in the landscape. \nShe builds her work in layers starting with a base fabric and adding collage\, paint and stitch. She reuses and recycles fabric\, bringing the evidence of previous use (buttons\, unpicked seams\, darts etc)\, left over scraps and threads into her work. \nShe moved to Worcester in 2018 and joined the Bevere Gallery Artists Studios in November 2022. She regularly exhibits with the Midlands Textile Forum and is a member of On the Surface Group in Moseley\, Birmingham taking part in Birmingham Open Studios and of Stitch Together Textiles. \nJane has been fascinated (not to say obsessed) with the history of exploration in Antarctica for over 30 years.  She visited twice and fell in love with this cold\, but beautiful\, place.  Her first visit in 2002 kick started a renewed interest in working with textiles as she tried to capture the strangeness of bergs and the colour of ice.  She created a textile diary on her second visit in 2020 (just before Covid19 shut everything down) and has produced many more works since.  She also become a trustee of the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust – the trust looks after 6 heritage sites on the Antarctic peninsula including Port Lockroy\, the penguin post office. \nThe talk is free to members of Textile Explorers\nDoors open at 7pm

She regularly exhibits with the Midlands Textile Forum and is a member of On the Surface Group in Moseley\, Birmingham taking part in Birmingham Open Studios and of Stitch Together Textiles. \nSee her work on –  Instagram: @jatextileart  Facebook: www.facebook.com/JATextileArt \nMidlands Textile Forum https://www.midlandstextileforum.com/jane-arthur \nWorkshop\nThis workshop explores capturing a sense of place using a favourite walk or location.  We’ll work with images and maps of your favourite place to select fabrics with matches of colour\, texture and pattern with the aim of creating a collage approx A4 in size which we will then work further with additional fabric and hand stitch. \nPreparation \nWhat you need to do before you come to the workshop –Take some photographs of the walk/location – what is your favourite spot/view? \n\nRemind yourself of your favourite season for walking there\, time of day\, how it makes you feel to be there\nPrint off a google-earth view\nLook at OS maps\, information on the walk/location.\n\nBring your images\, maps\, notes to the workshop \n What to bring with you \n\nSewing kit\, scissors etc\nEmbroidery/stitch threads in different weights\nA4 size (approx) backing fabric – recycle old napkins\, sheets or shirts if you can. Do not make your backing fabric too heavy as building up layers will make the piece hard to stitch through – or so thin that it is too flimsy!\nSmall selection of light/medium weight fabrics (cotton\, linen\, polycotton etc) that match the colours/patterns/texture of your walk. Chose fabrics that don’t fray and recycle as much as you can.\nFabric scraps from previous work.\n\nIf you are interested in using them you can also bring Inktense crayons\, fine pens (choose ones that don’t run on fabric). \nWhat will be provided \n\na large selection of fabric to delve into\nfabric scraps for layering – eg net\, organdie\nSmall pieces of Bondaweb and iron-on Vylene\n\nWorkshop outline\nIntroduction\nSession 1 – bring together your ideas and plan your work\nSession 2 – create your initial collage\, review and add detail\nLunch\nSession 3 – explore stitches for the final layer\nSession 4 – where next and options for further development \nThis is a predominantly hand stitched workshop.  If you bring any electrical equipment (sewing machine\, heat gun etc)\, this will need to be PAT tested in advance. \n  \nBooking Terms and Conditions:\nThe fee is non-refundable if you cancel (unless another person can take your place.)\nWe occasionally have a waiting list for a workshop and if that is the case your place would be offered to the next person on the list.
